Agents Based Models (ABM) A model is a representation of a real system and thus, it is an abstraction of the reality 4. â€Å"The word â€Å"modeling† comes from the Latin word modellus which describes a typical human way of coping with the reality† (Schichl, n.d.). Models can take various forms such as mathematical equation, drawing, computer code, etc. However, there is a common purpose of all designed models, which is to simplify the complexity presented in the real system or problem. Therefore, models usually contain only the main aspects of the real system (not all details). Macal and North (2006) believe that ‘‘There is no universal agreement on the precise definition of the term ‘agent’, although definitions tend to agree on more points than they disagree’’. It seems very complicated to extract agent characteristics from the literature in a consistent and constant perspective, because they are utilised in different ways (Bonabeau 2002). Agent-based modelling (ABM) is able to simulate the individual activities by measuring their behaviour and results over time for developing models of cities (Crooks 2006). Agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS) is a new approach to modeling systems comprised of autonomous, interacting agents. Child abuse is a phenomenon in today’s society. Many people have been victims and although it has been taken into consideration, more surveillance should be taking place. There are three types of abuse that ruin the life of a child: physical, emotional, and sexual. However, focusing on domestic violence, a child will be affected by physical and emotional abuse. The problem is that some parents may not even consider how it affects their child in public places. When a child has been abused, how long does it affect him or her into adulthood? Though there are different ways to discipline, a parent can choose from a variety of rewards to reinforce good behavior; furthermore, a trusted committee should organize ongoing parenting classes to help†¦show more content†¦It is hard to come home from work after dealing with a boss who dislikes his own job, making your job harder than it seems. Thomas Hardy wrote on his pessimistic views of the Victorian Age. Another author that influenced literature is Edgar Allan Poe. Poe is known as the father of the American short story and father of the detective story. To understand the literary contributions of Edgar Allan Poe, one must look at his early life, his literary life, and a summary of two of his famous works. Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston (Inglis 505) on January 19, 1809 (Asselineau 409). He was born to a southern family that were in a traveling company of actors (Inglis 505). His father, David Poe, was from a Baltimore family. He was an actor by profession and a heavy drinker. Soon after Edgar Allan Poe was born, he left his family. Poes mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, was a widow at the age of eighteen. Two years after his birth, she died of tuberculosis (Asselineau 409). When his mother died, Poe was adopted by John Allan (Perry XI) at the urging of Mr. Allans wife. In 1815, John Allan moved his family to England. While there, Poe was sent to private schools (Asselineau 410). In the spring of 1826, Poe entered the University of Virginia. There he studied Spanish, French, Italian, and Latin. He had an excellent scholastic record. He got into difficulties almost at once. Mr. Allan did not provide him with the money to pay for his fees and other necessities. Poe was confused and homesick. He learned to play cards and started drinking. Soon he was in debt in excess of two thousand dollars. Poe discovered that he could not depend upon Allan for financial support. His foster father refused to pay his debts, and Poe had to withdraw from the University (Asselineau 410). In May of 1827, Poe enlisted in the army as a common soldier. He did this under the name of Edgar A. Perry. He was stationed on Sullivans Island in Charleston Harbor for over a year. Poe adapted very well to military discipline and quickly rose to the rank of regimental sergeant major. After a while, he got tired of the same daily routine involved in military life. Poe wrote regularly to Mr. Allan. He met with Mr. Allan after the death of Mrs. Allan in February of 1829. With Allans support, he received his discharge and enlisted in West Point on July 1, l830 (Asselineau 410). While at West Point, Mr. Allan, who had remarried, continued in not providingPoe with enough money. Poe decided to have himself kicked out of school. Cutting classes and disregarding orders were his solutions. He was court-martialed for neglect of duties in January, 1831, and left West Point the following month (Asselineau 411). Poe was great in three different fields , and in each one he made a reputation that would give any man a high place in literary history. Poe wrote great short stories, famous not only in hisown country, but all over the world (Robinson V). Hawthorne, Irving, Balzac, Bierce, Crane, Hemingway and other writers have given us memorable short stories; but none has produced so great a number of famous and unforgettable examples, so many tales that continue, despite changing standards to be read and reprinted again and again throughout the world (Targ VII). Poe was the father of the modern short story, and the modern detective story (Targ VII). Withthe possible exception of Guy de Maupassant, no other writer is so universally known and esteemed for so large of a corpus of excellent tales as in Edgar Allan Poe (Targ VII).In 1831, Poe succeeded in publishing a new edition of his poems entitled, Poems. Poe was now in great difficulty. He went to New York, but could find no job there. Eventually he took refuge with his aunt, Mrs. Clemm, in Baltimore. There he decided to seek employment and make his living by writing. Failing to get attention with his poems, he decided to start writing short stories. Poe competed in a contest for the best short story in 1831. The prize was offered by Phil-Saturday Courier. Because he did not win the prize, Poe started on an ambitious project. He decided to plan a series of tales told by members of a literary group. He found no publisher forhis stories, and entered the contest again in June of 1835. The horror abysmal darkness, and absolute helplessness befalling the victims are described with vivid accuracy in tales such as The Fall of the House of Usher, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Premature Burial (Perry XI-XII). In The Fall of the House of Usher, the narrator visits his insane friend, Roderick Usher. Ushers house is huge and gloomy (Rogers 20). His twin sister, Madeline, gets sick and dies. The narrator and Usher place her in a tomb in the basement of Ushers house. What they do not realize is that she is still barely alive. Usher keeps on hearing sounds over the next couple of days. The seventh day after Madelines death, abad storm appears. The narrator and Usher open the door of the narrators room and Madeline falls on Usher . They both die. The narrator then leaves the house. As he rides away, the house collapses to the floor (Rogers 21).

The Hebrews The ancient Middle East and Mesopotamia was largely a multicultural society composed of small, often insignificant kingdoms that were regularly torn between the forces of powerful empires, from Babylon to Egypt to Greece to Rome. One of these small kingdoms through its religion, philosophy, and law became one of the most important cultures in Middle Eastern and Western history. The word Hebrew appears to have been derived from the world Hiberu, which was found in writing sent to Egypt by one of the small states that Egypt had left behind when it withdrew from Canaan in the 1300s BC. These states were distressed by the arrival of nomadic tribes that came in waves across generations. Hiberu meant outsider and probably referred to a great variety of migrants. Beginning as a closely-knit, war-like group of wandering tribes, this culture enjoyed for a short period, one of a histories greatest empires, but it soon fell into a small and feeble state. The Hebrews would surface as one of the most significant culture of the West and Middle East, giving us monotheism, law, and a new history for the west. For the first hundred years the Hebrews wandered and roamed the region of Mesopotamia, Palestine, and northern Egypt. From about 1950 BC to 1500 BC they rambled around the ancient Near East. Around 1500 BC they settled in the fertile land of northern Egypt called Goshen. It was here that these drifting tribes developed a national identity. Around 1200 BC the Hebrews, also called The children of Israel? left Egypt in an event called the Exodus. This historical event was lead by Moses. The Old Testament's Book of Exodus describes an unnamed pharaoh ordering the slaughter of all male Hebrew infants, and it describes a Hebrew woman trying to save her infant son, Moses, by putting him adrift on the Nile in a tiny boat of reeds caulked with tar pitch. Moses was credited with introducing a powerful single idol, Yahweh to the Hebrews. This new religion of Yahweh and the dramatic Exodus from Egypt are perhaps the main unifying events that solidified the Hebrews into a nation. The Hebrews enjoyed a brief time of magnificent power and prominent status. After a few hundred years of mostly unsuccessful attempts to drive out the established populations they were finally recognized as a monarchy. During this time Israel's three most famous Kings lived one after another. This small period of time is known as The golden age of Israel. The three kings, Saul, David and Solomon, unified the often squabbling tribes. The first king of the Israelites in 1029 BC was Saul. In spite of his victories he failed to push the Philistines toward the coast and tension grew between him and the prophet Samuel. Saul was overthrown and a new king was to be named. Saul would die in battle a short while after his dethroning against the Philistines on Mt. Gilboa. With the death of Saul, the Israelites would need a new king to rule the newly formed kingdom. Samuel chose David as his successor. Seven years of civil war was fought between the tribes controlled by David the new king and Ish-Bosheth son of Saul. The civil war ended when Ish-Bosheth was murdered and the people asked David to save them from the Philistines. David not only continued to rule the empire left to him by Saul, but organized it into a major political and religious power in that area. David also defeated the Arameans and annexed Aram-Damascus. In the east he routed the Moabites, conquered the state of Edom, and conquered the Ammonites. In order to keep a secure northern border, David made a pact with Hiram, King of Tyre.
